How We Research and Rate Whisky
What information we use, where it comes from, how recommendations are decided, and how we keep facts current.
Who writes this
Editorial content on bestwhiskyuk.com is written and reviewed by Archie Johnston. Every buying guide and profile carries a byline and a publish/update date so readers can see who is responsible for a claim and when it was last checked.
Where our facts come from
We prioritise sources in this order:
- Official distillery and brand product pages — for ABV, age statements, cask types and production method.
- Official industry and regulatory bodies (e.g. the Scotch Whisky Association) — for category definitions, regional classification and legal requirements.
- Established specialist whisky sources — for tasting characteristics where official material is thin.
- Established UK retailers — for current price and availability, which change more often than production facts.
Every listicle and product profile includes a Sources section naming which of these were used. We do not fabricate sources, invent test results, or cite information we haven't verified.
Facts vs. our judgement
We try to keep two things visibly separate in our writing:
Ardbeg 10 is bottled at 46% ABV and carries a 10-year age statement. This is a verifiable fact, sourced from the distillery.
It makes more sense for drinkers actively looking for peat smoke than for someone seeking a mild first Scotch. This is our interpretation of that fact for a specific use case, not a claim of objective fact.
Recommendations always come with a stated reason, so a reader can judge whether our reasoning applies to their own situation.
How we decide what to recommend
We compare whiskies against consistent attributes — category, region, ABV, cask maturation, smoke level, flavour profile and price — rather than ranking by brand recognition. A whisky is recommended for a specific use case (beginners, gifting, mixing, and so on) only when its production facts support that use case; we explain the reasoning in the guide rather than asserting a rank without justification. This page describes how selection works; it does not make claims about affiliate or advertising relationships, which are not yet documented publicly.
How we keep pages current
Whisky production facts (ABV, cask type, region) are stable and rarely need revisiting. Prices, availability, limited editions and awards change often. We track three dates on every page:
- Published — when the page first went live.
- Reviewed — the last time an editor checked the page for accuracy, even if nothing changed.
- Updated — the last time the content materially changed.
We don't change these dates without a corresponding change to the content.

Corrections
If you spot an inaccuracy in a specification, price or claim, we want to know. Corrections are made directly to the relevant page, with the "Updated" date revised accordingly.
